I am GENERAL OK

Established in 2008

AST swim school was established in 2008. Debbie Stenning, owner and director, started her career in 1987 as an assistant and qualified in 1990.  She has always shown a deep interest in the sport, swimming competitively as a youngster to more recent years competing in triathlons.

Through the years she has furthered her knowledge and training through the Swim England and STA programmes such as Disability swimming and her Diploma in Baby swimming. Debbie and her staff regularly attend ongoing training courses and conferences to ensure their teaching is of the highest standard possible.

Small swimming classes with high teacher to pupil ratios

Debbie started with a small pool and 20 swimmers and now runs 7 pools across North Devon and Somerset and has over 800 swimmers on role. At AST we pride ourselves on our small classes with a Teacher and Assistant to each class.

We have written our own swimming program covering both the STA and Swim Englands criteria to start with the basics of water confidence and safety working up to strong competent swimming. We work on individual strokes and as we move into the higher levels we look at starts and turns as well as teaching important survival and rescue skills.

Children can join our learn to swim programme from the age of 4. With small classes and high teacher to pupil ratios, you can be assured that your children are being taught in a caring and nurturing environment.

We're passionate about delivering engaging, fun lessons

Debbie and her team are passionate about delivering engaging, fun lessons. All of our teachers have either started with us at a young age, from swimmer, to assistant, to teacher, or have been parents of our swimmers themselves before training with us.  Before becoming an AST instructor, not only do our team have to complete their STA qualifications but everyone also has to then complete a 10 week in-house training program. With all staff are DBS certified, First aid trained and Rescue trained, you can be sure that your children are in the best hands.

Children will be learning different elements of swimming each week, the equipment they use is varied so that your child does not become reliant on one piece of equipment to get them to swim.

Our additional training in disabilities means that we can support all children, teenagers and adults who may need more support whether this be in our group lessons or on a more 1:1 basis.

Always a joy to see my little one swimming with AST on a Saturday. You will be greeted with a smile and the swimming instructors are lovely, I’ve seen such an improvement in my little one’s confidence in the water and it’s all down to how much fun he has with AST.

AST have been fantastic at supporting my son to find his confidence in the water again and to start his journey to learn to swim. They have used his interests to make the lessons even more fun for him. I would highly recommend AST for swimming lessons!

Debbie and her team are amazing at what they do, my daughter loves swimming with them, they have taught her everything she needs to get in the water with confidence and is always at ease. Such an amazing Swimschool I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.
